ANTHONY CUMMINS : BLACK BURZUM SPEECH
Wordclay
Hmmm, somewhat of a contentious one, this one. When it comes to Count Grischnackh/Varg Vikernes (or whatever he calls himself these days), he is truly representative of the phrase “love him or hate him, you can’t ignore him”. Antony Cummins (MA) seems (and I DO emphasise SEEMS) to fall into the former ‘camp’ and appears to actually idolise and hero worship the man. Now, I know he has committed severely extreme crimes, and has served his time accordingly, so technically he has a ‘clean sheet’ – but try as I might – I simply cannot see why or how he is worthy of such adoration.
Such personal misgivings and reservations aside, I awaited the arrival of this book with some anticipation, as I always look forward to any new kind reading matter of a musical nature. So what then is this like? Is it actually any good? Well… yes and no. The main ‘no’ is that this whole thing is written in a very Lovecraftian style, simply ‘overlaid’ with Burzum lyrics – from which stories are made/taken.
Let me elucidate further, I did NOT get sent a copy of this book to review for free, I ordered and paid for it out of my own pocket, so I am not here in ANY shape or form, to do a “hatchet job”. Here though are my honest thoughts… “Burzum Black Speech” (in my opinion) will appeal hugely to Varg Vikernes/Count Grishnackh’s band of extremist followers as a work of genius. I suspect that for the rest of us, this will be a mildy diverting if none too original visit into otherworldly/’midworldy’ places.
My personal BIG objection is seeing Varg turned into a mythic hero – something he is plainly not. A fairly clear-cut case of “Buyer Beware” methinks. I’m going to pass on scoring this – as I simply and honestly am not sure where to start.
