THE BANDS

Examining Femme Metal’s roster is a sure-fire way of discovering bands you’d likely never encountered before. Not because they lack quality – quality is here in abundance – rather that while many have shared Carrie’s vision, few have coherently and dedicatedly carried it out, resulting in many female-fronted acts falling by the wayside.

Below we introduce the eight signings that comprise the Femme Metal family thus far, and outline what you can expect from them this year, and where you can find out more. We were particularly struck by the number of bands who wanted to contribute their say to this article- clearly this is a label which has already engendered great loyalty and trust from its clients.

A.D.D

An American melodic metal-rock act with a diverse approach and fresh sound, A.D.D (Analog Digital Disorder) are at the mellower end of FMR’s spectrum, but have plenty of kick, not least due to their warm, creative guitar lines, and the deep, strong tones of vocalist Margaret Young. An extended edition of their 2006 debut is currently available from the label, and the band continue their impressive run of live appearances.

ANCESTRAL LEGACY

Symphonic Norwegians Ancestral Legacy are a slow-burning project, and have spent a good number of years making sure that their sound is precisely as they envisioned it. Although a number of interesting and imaginative EPs exist bearing their mark, the debut full-length from the band will be released later this year; expect powerful, fearless black metal with swathes of beautiful vocals from Isadora Cortina.

In my view… Eddie (Ancestral Legacy)

What can we expect from the band this year?

First thing of major importance for Ancestral Legacy this year will be the release of our first album, "Nightmare Diaries". The release date is not set, but it will be "asap", some time in Spring. Our vocalist is in Mexico, awaiting some paperwork to be done so she can move to Norway, therefore we can't plan any live gigs prior to June. There is one little festival confirmed plus that we will do a little European tour when the Autumn comes. Besides that we will support the album as best as we can by doing interviews and spam as much as we can on Myspace and elsewhere, he he.

What have been your impressions of FMR so far?

I've been a member of Caz' (label manager) web forum almost since it's beginning, so we were familiar with each other and of course she had heard our previous stuff. So when she started a label I asked her pretty quick if she was interested in releasing our album, and she was. We had tried for months getting a label for it and suddenly we got it right up our face!

I have to admit I didn't have big expectations for the label at once, I was just happy that someone would sign us. But over the past couple of months there has been a quick progress within the label, first and foremost on the distribution side, so now I really start to believe that this will be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come. Wishing all the best to Caz and all the other bands on Femme Metal Records!

ARAPACIS

AraPacis are a truly progressive band, hailing from Canada and delighting in a sound that combines 70s prog rock with a modern, gothic metal twist, ably held together by the overarching vocals of frontwoman Lizzie Fyre. Invested with boundless creativity, this is an act unafraid of the possibility of forging their own path. The band are currently working on their second album, and already have some live appearances planned for later on in the Summer.

In my view… Jerry (AraPacis)

What are AraPacis's plans for 2009?

We are in the process of recording our second album, which at this point has 7 songs recorded instrumentally and is now at the vocals recording stage (2 are actually done: "Consequences of Dreams", which will probably be the title track  to our next album and is out now on MySpace and other sites, and "Death of Loneliness" which should be on the next FMR compilation "Demonic and Divine". We will probably record another 3 or 4 songs to flesh out the album, as we have had time to write some interesting new material since recording those original 7. Once the album comes out, we plan to tour a lot to support it, starting at the beginning of May most likely.

How did you come into contact with Femme Metal Records, and what have been your impressions of the label so far?

I came into contact with Caz on her Femme Metal Forum and the work she did on that really impressed me! We kept seeing a lot of each other on various forums and sites, and then she featured us on her forum as well as offered us a slot in the "Ferocity and Femininity" compilation, which we thought was really cool. When she opened her record company she offered to sign us and her terms being very favourable, we accepted just about immediately. As for the label, I have looked at the other bands she has signed and there is quite a lot of talent and variety in her roster. So this is looking very promising for both parties.

BRAVE

Progressiveness is a recurring feature on the FMR roster; Brave are another act with a forward-thinking, dark attitude. Founded by siblings Michelle and Scott Loose, the band already have two full-length albums under their collective belts, and have recently released a special 10th Anniversary CD of their 14 strongest tracks on the label. Michelle’s voice, sweet and clear, stands head above the vast majority of female-fronted bands who peddle a similar style, whilst the underlying musical approach hits dizzyingly beautiful heights

In my view… Michelle (Brave)

What are Brave's plans for 2009?

We are very happy to announce that we have signed Femme Metal Records for a 10 year anniversary CD that will be released on February 20, 2009.  The CD will feature tracks spanning over the last 10 years, including songs from our most recent CD "Monuments" to our much older material released under our former band name Arise From Thorns which are long out of print.  We hope to continue play shows in and around our home town of Washington DC in 2009 and continue to promote "Monuments" and the anniversary CD.

How did you come into contact with Femme Metal Records, and what have been your impressions of the label so far?

I believe my brother (Brave guitarist Scott Loose) came into contact with them on Myspace.  Everyone at Femme Metal has been absolutely wonderful to work with.  They truly care about their bands and have a passion to promote female fronted metal bands that I have not seen in quite some time.

CARDAMON

Cardamon are FMR’s first signing from The Netherlands. Formed by extreme metal veterans Thomas Kalksma and Koen Romeijn, the band offers a classic mix of metallic crunch and beautiful female-voice melodies, not failing to evoke fellow countrymen The Gathering, but also injecting a good deal of their own spirit and fire for a unique and immersive gothic metal experience. 2009 promises to be the year when they burst through onto the international scene.

Myspace: www.myspace.com/cardamon

In my view… Kevin (Cardamon)

What are Cardamon's plans for 2009?

Cardamon's plans for 2009 include the writing of the follow-up album to "The Primrose Path" and extensive gigging. We are discussing the possibilities of doing a minitour in the UK, amongst others. Spreading the album as far as it will take us.

How did you come into contact with Femme Metal Records, and what have been your impressions of the label so far?

Carrie has been very supportive. It feels like she is really setting out to make her label and bands get out there and is doing a pretty good job too! We hope the partnership between Cardamon and Femme Metal Records will be as fruitful as the plans we are making. Carrie really is involved every step of the way. Replies to mails in a
split second and gets things done. Just watch us in 2009...

HAND

hAND share a homeland with Femme Metal, and in spite of relative youth are remarkably hard-working and dedicated musicians, whose gothic edge mingles with a classic rock guitar sensibility and progressive outlook, resulting in an interesting and fresh listen, rendered raw by the intimate and honest vocal style of Kat Ward. Debut album "Deadroom Journal" impressed a broad range of critics in 2008, whilst 2009 promises a couple of new adventures, and various live performances.

Myspace: www.myspace.com/handgothicband

In my view… Kat (hAND)

What are hAND’s plans for the coming year?

We are currently in the midst of writing new material for our second album. Later in the year we will be heading to the studio to record an E.P with track previews and acoustic versions (due Feb 2010). As well as that we’re playing shows all over the UK and making our first festival appearance in London during the summer.

How did you begin your partnership with Femme Metal Records?

Initially I signed up to Femme Metal Forum last year to promote the band and generally find out more about the femme metal scene. A few months ago "The Boss" as we affectionately call Caz announced that she was starting a record label. I got in contact and within a couple of weeks we were signed to FMR, It was a great new year’s gift.

We are really happy with Femme Metal Records, so far we’ve been on all the major metal new sites and our Myspace has gone crazy with friend requests and messages from all over the world. It has definitely raised our profile as a band even in such a short space of time.

LYRIEL

Femme Metal’s most recent acquisition, Lyriel are a German act with more than a hint of folk, and a confident, bewitching approach. Two full-lengths have brought universal applause, and a third is very much underway. The band continue to promote themselves through impressive, captivating live performances while the fans wait…

Myspace: www.myspace.com/lyrielband

SOULGRIND

Perhaps the most experienced band on the roster, Soulgrind have been active since 1992. Not content with unleashing a hefty eight full-length albums, the band members have also found time to be active in a panoply of other metal bands. Distilling their creative approach into a blackened-gothic flavour of assault, Soulgrind are both powerful and moving, boasting a scope that knows virtually no boundaries.

Myspace: www.myspace.com/soulgrind

While many hard months remain until Femme Metal Records can be said to have stood the test of time, the overwhelming positivity and support that poured forth from their roster during the creation of this article are mighty testament to the genuine and selfless spirit of the organisation, and more than anything it’s determination and the right attitude that sail labels through difficult times. That FMR have also picked such an impressive collection of artists upon which to pin their hopes will not hurt either.

Am I convinced that female-fronted bands need specific support to succeed in the world of metal? Not at all. The female-fronted acts with, for lack of a better phrase, the balls to succeed will eventually do so anyway. The gender of your vocalist can’t really hinder or help you, when ultimate push comes to critical shove. But ask me whether I think a supportive, positive platform for ‘femme metal’ is a good thing, and I’m totally sold; all eight of these bands had escaped my radar, because they don’t hit the right trends to be pushed by your traditional outlets, and they inhabit a forest through which I do not regularly root, pig-like, for musical truffles. Much as Carrie felt the need to state in her interview, I don’t like Femme Metal Records because I’m a woman. I like them because they are championing their own particular corner of the underground, and bringing woefully hidden gems into the light.

Watch them in 2009. I don’t doubt they’ll unleash yet more treasures.
