- I’ll be honest, I came at these
guys figuring that with the name they have etc, I would be listening to a kind of obscure
and underground neo-folk or something similar... whoops. Boy have I got the proverbial
“egg on my face”... Wicked King Wicker is in fact, a ferociously heavy, brutal,
and downright unpleasant black/drone/doom outfit! This is actually their sixth studio
album, but it’s the first time in their long history, that they have had anything
released outside of the Americas. As befits a band so brutal, so dark, so distressingly
emotionally draining, they have found a very natural ‘happy home’ (ahem) amongst
many other great extreme acts at the very excellent Cold Spring Records.

- Now, as you are already well aware, I
have a great weakness...nay ‘taste’ for all things drone, and I now have sunk my
incisors into the immaculate rare and bloody fillet steak that is Wicked King Wicker...and
I am drooling uncontrollably a la Homer Simpson on a donut rampage! This is ugly, savagely
psychedelic, scythingly heavy, bestially ferocious, an unholy ‘new’ band, more
than ready to show their colours alongside Kabalist, Sunn o))), Corrupted, Skullflower,
(the late lamented) Khanate, and their multitude droning brethren in arms. If Stephen
“God Of Drone” O’Malley isn’t already aware of this monstrous outfit,
I’m sure he will be very soon.

- Not unusually for the drone/doom
genre, these brain-fucking Noo Yoikers, excel at the epic end of the three minute pop
songs... well not quite, as not one of the three songs found here clocks in at under
sixteen minutes! Drone can be done badly – there are a plethora of drone
would-be’s out there today, but WKW are genuinely ‘up there’ amongst the
true genre giants, and this new studio album should highlight to the wider world what a
truly exceptional outfit they are. This band truly deserves to be recognised, perhaps now,
at long last, and extremely overdue, this may actually be their time...
