Issue Twelve - God Damn the Sun

So, we blinked and all of a sudden found ourselves here, burnt and torpid by the onslaught of a heinously sticky summer.

I’ll start by apologising for your lack of an editorial in accompaniment to last issue; bless all your blackened hearts for the messages, even if they were rather demanding in tone. I rather thought that our fabulous discussion with Vrangsinn, regarding his Misantrof ANTIRecords project amongst other things, deserved every last second of my time, and as the schedule has clearly been eating us alive once more, it was a down to the wire thing.

This time around the crew has been fixated upon reviews – even after a lot of long nights digesting and arguing, and a larger haul of articles than we’ve previously achieved, there are STILL releases out there we can’t wait to get our teeth into. Nothing riles me more (ok, quite a few things do, but for the sake of effect lets pretend) than metal critics who direct their entire year’s discourse towards that crappy fortnight at the end (i.e. YEARLIST TIME, bleugh), but hell, even I can’t escape the fact that 2009 is shaping up brilliantly for extreme metal. I was gleefully blown away by the new Vomitory album this issue, and found a new obsession in the form of Ava Inferi. Muttley revelled in the new offerings from Obituary, Dream Theater and Bone Gnawer, whilst Paul was also pleased with well-established bands such as Tyr and the mighty Devin Townsend. It seems like the big guns are determined to fire off some impressively thunderous assaults this summer, which is good news all round… We haven’t given up our dedication to the weird, the wonderful and the decidedly underground, however; I discovered a surprising outfit from Norway who go by the name of Intemperence, and also walked on the shadowy, ambient path in the company of Nagual Art, an experience not soon to be forgotten. I was really struck by the diversity of our wanderings this time around – just seeing the insane variety of subjects Muttley managed to cover in one afternoon’s work brought a big old smile to my face, and assured me that we were still on the bold course we originally plotted.

Our interview chamber has been busy, but the fruits from a lot of hard work are still blossoming (i.e… I’m writing it up, don’t RUSH me). We do have an interesting if unsightly treasure for you though, in the form of a chat with Orthodox Divinity, a solo artist from Scotland who makes a lot of the so-called underground sound like Nightwish.

Our next issue will be with you on the 16 July- we’ve got a lot of interesting demos and unknown artists to talk about, alongside making some more inroads into all the lovely stuff the labels seem to be turning out at the moment. We’re like pigs in shit.

As always, if you’d like to feature on our pages, drop me a line at hierophantnox@gmail.com.

Try not to melt out there,

Dark regards
